Swiss watchmaker Breitling has launched the Exospace B55 , a smartwatch that combines a quartz movement with advanced chronograph functions that all you pilots out there will find useful. The age of the luxury smartwatch is upon us. And brands from Bvlgari to IWC have entered the fray with their own battery-powered products as well. Breitling fans will recognize them from the dials of the brand's hybrid offerings, such as the Aerospace chromos, where they function as the displays for extra chronograph timers and alarm functions. But Breitling is pushing the B55 as a luxury watch with digital connectivity features, rather than an out and out smartwatch. An automatic backlighting feature is incorporated in the twin LCD displays, which automatically provide backlighting for the watch face when a user tilts the watch at least 35 degrees on their wrist, making it easy to gain information from the device in the dark. Finally, those little screens can show you notifications for calendar appointments, text messages, and other info from your smartphone.

Head over to Breitling's site for availability info.

That seemingly stratospheric price, four times more than a Tag Heuer smartwatch and on a par with a Gold Edition Apple Watch, has something to do with the fact that it is aimed squarely at those that spend their lives in the upper reaches of the Earth's atmosphere - i.e. pilots. Since its connected watch debut, the superbly monikered Exospace B55, it has reversed the roles and made the phone the slave of the watch. The B55 uses a rechargeable battery, which requires charging once every two months with normal use.

The B55 looks enough like an analogue watch to begin with, that is, until you spy the pair of embedded LCD screens.

The Exospace B55 is priced at $8,900. It also features a hyper-accurate "SuperQuartz" movement, which is fine-tuned to compensate for things such as pressure and temperature to keep it accurate. Additionally, data collected by the watch, such as flight time and lap times, can be transferred to the app, cataloged, and shared.
